Home Safe vs. Safe Deposit Box: Which Is Right for You in Kenya?

It’s the classic dilemma: a safe at home, or a safe deposit box in a vault? Both have a place in a sensible security plan — here’s how they differ in the Kenyan context.
Home safes: convenient, but limited
A good home safe keeps petty cash and daily-wear items out of sight. But most residential safes are not built to resist a determined, undisturbed attack — and a burglar with time can simply remove the safe and open it elsewhere. Fire ratings vary wildly, and insurers often apply strict conditions (and low limits) to valuables kept at home.
Safe deposit boxes: security by design
- Reinforced strongroom construction no home can match
- Dual-key control — the box cannot be opened without you
- Biometric access control with full entry logs
- Insurance for fire, theft and damage inside the vault
- 24/7 member access at a dedicated facility
So which should you choose?
Use both. Keep what you need daily — some cash, spare keys, frequently worn jewellery — in a decent home safe. Send everything that is irreplaceable, high-value or rarely needed to the vault: title deeds, wills, investment gold, heirlooms and documents.
The test is simple: if your house burned down tonight, what would you grieve? That’s your vault list.
